Heritage + hope

Autumn in Perth

I’ve spent the week just gone considering the history, present + future of a new aspect of my life. I’ve spent the past 18 months or so working with Baptist Churches + the last week or so attending a class on Baptist identity. Today, I receive a Facebook post of ancestral note. The two events and their co-incidence remind me of my heritage + my gift to the future. Continue reading “Heritage + hope”

Saints alive…

cemetery-290901_1280Saints have been a part of my story forever. When I and my siblings were named, we were named with a saint’s name. We were named with two saints’ names, actually, and then as we reached the age of confirming our faith, we each adopted another saint’s name. That’s three saints that we carry with us each and every moment.

Then there are the stories of the saints. There are saints whose stories are told in the bible, and those whose stories come to us in other ways.

My ‘favourite’ saints are patron saints. St Jerome is patron saint of libraries. Continue reading “Saints alive…”

Aaahhh, the p+f……

I have just spent another evening at our school parents and friends committee night.

It always leaves me impressed.

These people are good people, all of them. This includes the ones who turn up on a Tuesday night, and the ones who don’t, the ones who fundraise, and the ones who don’t, the ones who argue and the ones who complement, as well as the ones who compliment.

For a whole bunch of reasons, many of them dubious, I am not very ‘involved’ in the p+f. I thank those who are, even the ones who are keen as mustard to have an “Easter Bunny” visit our church-based primary school to shower our little children with chocolates during Holy Week, before Easter Sunday. I think the visit is planned on Holy Thursday.

I feel mean-spirited to voice my voice of difference about this, so I don’t. I know these people want their children and mine to have hundreds of magical moments, including magical school moments, magical Easter moments, and magical mainstream culture moments. The spirit of ecumenism is called upon frequently. I do what I can, sometimes poorly. Ecumenism is about bringing our authentic selves to the table, and my authentic self HATES THE EASTER BUNNY GIVING CHOCOLATE TO MY CHILD AT MY CHURCH SCHOOL ON HOLY THURSDAY. But, because I have no idea how to say that without yelling, I choose to listen instead to the joy that these parents wish for our children.

Now, who’s the patron saint for rabbits? Francis, perhaps. Yes, I think I’ll have a word with him about this.
